What is the European Hematology Exam?
The European Hematology Exam aims to certify excellent knowledge according to the criteria and topics of the European Hematology Curriculum.
The exam:
- Consists of 100 multiple choice questions in English
- Covers all 8 sections of the European Hematology Curriculum
- Takes 2.5 hours
If you pass the European Hematology Exam, you'll receive a certificate from EHA. This extra 'quality stamp' complements the official right to practice that's granted by your national authority.
Who should take part in the exam?
The exam is mainly aimed at hematologists who have just finalized their specialty training.
It's also open to mid-career and senior hematologists who would like to check if their knowledge is still up to date.
Why should you take the exam?
- It's the only European hematology exam.
- It's based on the European Hematology Curriculum.
- It gives you an EHA ‘quality stamp’ that you can use alongside your national certification.
- If you're a young hematologist, it can help you access further training.
- In some countries, it can help you access research grants.
- It's an official exam in Switzerland.
- It's part of final assessment (grade) in some countries.
How to practice for the exam
European Hematology Curriculum and EHA Progress Test
The European Hematology Curriculum covers everything a European hematologist should know.
The EHA Progress Test, modeled on previous European Hematology Exams, is available on the EHA Campus twice each year in March and November. If you take it, you'll receive in-depth feedback on your answers.
In 2024, 78% of exam candidates who took the EHA Progress Test passed the European Hematology Exam.

Quality assurance
EHA has a dedicated Question Writers Group that works to ensure that the European Hematology Exam's questions and answers:
- Are of high scientific and educational quality
- Adhere to the European recommended level
- Cover the full spectrum of the European Hematology Curriculum
The group consists of 20 experienced hematologists who have been trained by educationalists on how to write good exam questions.
Once the Question Writers Group has created a set of exam questions, a separate Review Group then reassesses them and selects a final set that represents all sections of the European Hematology Curriculum.
In addition, EHA collaborates with CITO, an internationally recognized professional research and knowledge institute in the field of testing and educational measurement. CITO provides an independent judgment on the quality of the:
- Exam
- Passing score definition
CITO’s Psychometric Research and Knowledge Center also performs the psychometric analysis of the results.
